When I first became a pharmacy technician, I was excited to work in healthcare. It gave me the opportunity to help patients, learn about medications, and gain valuable healthcare experience. For several years, I enjoyed being part of a profession that plays an important role in patient safety and care.
But over time, I realized I wanted something more.
This wasn’t because pharmacy technicians aren’t important. They absolutely are. The pharmacy cannot function without skilled technicians. However, I began to feel limited in my role and wanted greater opportunities to grow within healthcare.
Feeling Like I Had More Potential
As I gained experience, I started asking myself what I wanted my future to look like.
I knew I was capable of learning more, doing more, and taking on greater responsibilities. While pharmacy technician work helped me build a strong foundation in healthcare, I felt there were limited opportunities for advancement without pursuing additional education.
I didn’t want to stay in the same place for the next ten or twenty years wondering what could have been.
I wanted to challenge myself and continue growing professionally.
Wanting More Direct Patient Care
One of the biggest reasons I decided to pursue mursing was my desire to work more closely with patients.
As a pharmacy technician, I interacted with patients regularly, but most of those interactions were brief and focused on prescriptions and medication questions.
I wanted the opportunity to build stronger relationships with patients and families. I wanted to be directly involved in patient care, education, advocacy, and recovery.
Nursing offered exactly that.
The Financial Reality
Another factor is income.
Pharmacy technicians work hard and carry significant responsibilities, yet compensation often does not reflect the level of responsibility required for the position.
As a mother and someone rebuilding my life and future, financial stability became increasingly important to me.
Pursuing nursing offered the opportunity for greater career growth, increased earning potential, and long-term financial security.
Becoming a CNA Was My Next Step
Before nursing school, I chose to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
I wanted hands-on patient care experience and a better understanding of what nurses do every day. Becoming a CNA helped confirm that I was moving in the right direction and strenthed my desire to continue toward my nursing degree.
Why Nursing
Nursing is about more than a career change for me.
It’s about purpose.
Throughout my life, there have been times when I have felt helpless, uncertain, and overwhelmed by circumstances beyond my control. During those difficult moments, the kindness, compassions, and support of healthcare professionals made a lasting impact on me.
Those experiences taught me what it feels like to be vulnerable and in need of help. They also showed me how much of a difference once caring person can make in someone’s life.
As I thought about my future, I realized I wanted to be that person for others.
I wanted to give back by caring for patients during some of their most challenging moments. I want to provide comfort, education, encouragement, and support when people need it most.
Nursing alls me to combine my healthcare experience, my desire to help others, and my personal understanding of what it feels like to need help yourself.
For me, nursing isn’t just a profession It’s an opportunity to serve others, make a meaningful difference, and turn some of life’s hardest experiences into something positive.
Looking Forward
Leaving pharmacy technician work wasn’t about walking away from healthcare. It was about continuing my journey within healthcare
The knowledge and skills I gained as a pharmacy technician will always be part of who I am and will help me become a better nurse.
Today, I’m taking the next steps toward nursing school with excitement, determination, and a belief that it’s never too late to pursue a bigger dream.
If you’re a pharmacy technician considering nursing, know that you’re not alone. Sometimes growth requires us to take a leap of faith and trust that we’re capable of more than we imagined.
